My approach to a painting is to initially block in the composition selecting a color range - hues and values and primarily based on large color fields. I then refine by re-working the boundaries and repeating colors throughout the composition to create continuity. If chroma key is too high I'll glaze over entire composition and cut through to underlayer , revealing color and adding texture /movement with brushes and pottery tools.
