Forest Sunset Before The Storm

Started this with charcoal pencil and a pen to create a pattern of winter branches. I wanted to sense the trees as shapes and the negative spaces, After doing drawing I carefully chose the colors of the bark on the trees, the areas behind the trees, and the sunset of the sky. In creating a light and dark side, I sought to invite the drama of a shifting light and the contrast between the winter sunset and the muted palette of the trees. This was done with soft pastels as the final layer.
