"Out With The Old, In With The New" was inspired by the experience of living through the 2018 eruption of Kilauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawai‘i. The moonlit scene depicts the fissure that erupted on my neighbor's property to form a spectacular lava fountain and lava flows. I developed a method for flicking and spraying liquified pastels using a paint-like mixture made from pastel dust and Spectrafix fixative. This technique allows for the creation of minute details and complex built-up textures that could not be rendered any other way. The splattered color can be used to boldly stand out, such as in the lava fountain, or it can be integrated into existing areas to create complex and organic textures that would be impossible to build up with traditional application methods.
