My painting ‘Sticks and Stones’ is the 2nd in a series of still-life paintings exploring the concept of trompe l'oeil, using realistic imagery to create an optical illusion that some of the objects depicted exist on top of the two dimensional surface. It pays tribute to both Michelangelo’s ‘Creation of Adam’ and Eschers ‘Drawing Hands’ in capturing a paintings creation. While the title challenges the criticism that hyperrealistic artists experience regularly from artists of other genres. The title also playfully refers to pastel pencils and sticks. My right-hand details the stone while the same hand is placing another stone into the painting which hopefully causes a conundrum for the viewer. Where does 2 dimensional painting begin or end?
