Gator Board treated with clear gesso, black acrylic paint and pumice. An introductory use of this surface. Touching the rough surface brought water to mind and boats in boat yards always draw my attention - the aged surface of boat came through beautifully. The challenge of the painting was to get the structure and shadow in place and finding responsive pastels [light touch!]
